“Look at that view!” Gloria Fike exclaims, throwing open the door to the second story veranda. The water of the Indian River sparkles under the sunlight, the tops of the palm trees sway softly in the breeze. “This was Mrs. Leach’s bedroom,” Fike remarks, “and she had the best room in the house!” The Mrs. Leach she is referring to is Coca-Cola heiress Anne Winship Leach, married to Willaford Ransom Leach. The house is The Mansion at Tuckahoe, perched upon a hill in Jensen Beach.Read more about Passionate Preservationist

Q: What do you love most about nursing?
A: I’m a “people person.” I enjoy talking and listening to people and their stories. I love to see people laugh, and one of my gifts is “clowning.” Working as an oncology nurse, I developed a sense of responsibility toward the patients, not only to provide compassionate nursing care, but also to cheer them up. I’ve dressed up to go to work on holidays, decorated their rooms, told them jokes and even danced.
Q: What is the most difficult aspect of caring for people?Read more about Life lessons from a veteran nurse

1. Schedule your juice cleanse strategically. Don’t start it when you have friends visiting, a cocktail party to attend, or – in my case – a food issue of a magazine to produce. The moment I walked into a restaurant for a photo shoot, and was hit with the scent of fried food and fragrant sauces, was a low point. It smelled so ridiculously, torturously good. (Seriously, avoid restaurants at all costs.)Read more about 4 lessons I Learned From

How to dress for your destination: Prague
“For exploring the beautiful streets of Prague, I’ll wear something comfortable, but true to my minimal aesthetic: a Tibi slip dress, Givenchy jacket over my shoulders, Balenciaga sandals and a Marni crossbody bag.”
How to dress for your destination: Charleston
“Nothing beats this charming South Carolina beach town – for a trip with my family I’ll pack an easy J.Crew tee, Tibi striped linen trousers, espadrilles, a printed Kenzo backpack and a basic black swimsuit like this one from Lisa Marie Fernandez.”

If you’re not a fan of high-calorie energy drinks or coffee, Energems are a must-try. Developed by Boca Raton resident Brian Street, the bite-size energy and vitamin supplements are low in calories and taste like M&M’S.
Available in milk chocolate, peanut butter or mint flavors, these supplements pack caffeine and B-12 vitamins.
One Energem is only 15 calories. A serving of three pieces contains 45 calories total and 325.5 milligrams of a caffeine-energy blend. Just be careful not to eat more than three, or you’ll be wired into the night.Read more about Editor’s Pick: Energy Drink Alternative, Energems

The first of four generations of Martin County natives, Toley A. Engebretsen has been a hardworking, civic-minded, good neighbor since he was born here in 1928.
Owner of Toley’s Boatyard in Port Salerno until 1969, having taken it over from his father 10 years prior, the Engebretsens were the go-to guys for boat repair, sportfishing charters and small boat construction at the height of the commercial fishing industry in the famously rough-and-tumble pioneer community.Read more about History Keeper

“Number, please?”
Thousands of times over her 35 years as a telephone operator for Southern Bell in downtown Stuart, Dorothy Anderson’s sweet Southern drawl helped connect calls for residents, even before there was a dial on the phone and before you even had to know the number you were calling.
“There were less than 300 telephones in Stuart, and pretty soon I had all the numbers memorized,” says Anderson, who is a healthy 96 years old and living with her daughter, Debra Sigafoose, in Tropical Farms. “Stuart was a quaint little town, even smaller than Port Salerno.”Read more about Southern Charm
