Being in the right place at the right time is more than being lucky – it’s about being prepared.
For long-time Stuart residents Bill and Leila Oughterson, it was both. From being tucked snuggly in a bed for an emergency appendectomy when the atom bomb was dropped to seeing an old girlfriend who happened to introduce the future couple, they have lived a charmed life.
Leila, 91, and Bill, 87, live comfortably at Sandhill Cove after years of using their energy to help others while making Martin County home.Read more about Lucky in Love

“Look at that view!” Gloria Fike exclaims, throwing open the door to the second story veranda. The water of the Indian River sparkles under the sunlight, the tops of the palm trees sway softly in the breeze. “This was Mrs. Leach’s bedroom,” Fike remarks, “and she had the best room in the house!” The Mrs. Leach she is referring to is Coca-Cola heiress Anne Winship Leach, married to Willaford Ransom Leach. The first of four generations of Martin County natives, Toley A. Engebretsen has been a hardworking, civic-minded, good neighbor since he was born here in 1928.
Owner of Toley’s Boatyard in Port Salerno until 1969, having taken it over from his father 10 years prior, the Engebretsens were the go-to guys for boat repair, sportfishing charters and small boat construction at the height of the commercial fishing industry in the famously rough-and-tumble pioneer community.Read more about History Keeper

Thousands of times over her 35 years as a telephone operator for Southern Bell in downtown Stuart, Dorothy Anderson’s sweet Southern drawl helped connect calls for residents, even before there was a dial on the phone and before you even had to know the number you were calling.
“There were less than 300 telephones in Stuart, and pretty soon I had all the numbers memorized,” says Anderson, who is a healthy 96 years old and living with her daughter, Debra Sigafoose, in Tropical Farms. “Stuart was a quaint little town, even smaller than Port Salerno.”Read more about Southern Charm
