Q: When was the moment you knew you wanted to be a fashion designer?
I wanted to be a fashion designer at a very, very young age. I think it must have been around 13 or 14 years, when I liked to watch the tailors in my mother’s atelier, where all the custom clothes were made in the house. I would hang out with the cutters and the tailors and they used to love me. I used to just play around with scissors and cut cloth and I loved it, so I knew that I wanted to do this.

Q: What was it like coming to America for the first time?
It was “Alice in Wonderland.”
Q: When did you realize you wanted to be a fashion designer?
I never thought I would be a fashion designer, I was only thinking about paying the rent. And to pay the rent, you had to make beautiful clothes that people wanted to wear. That’s what drove me to design.

Q: When did you first realize you had a fascination with antique jewelry?
I realized that I had a love for antique jewelry when I was probably, I want to say, 8 or 9 years old. There was an antique jeweler in Maine, her name was Mrs. Ivers, she had cotton blue candy hair, and she was an old-school Mainer. She was an antique collector/dealer and she gave me my first piece of jewelry, which was a wedding band, weirdly enough.
