Sea Turtle Takes You On A Tour Of The Great Barrier Reef, All In An Effort To Save It
We have plenty of great dive spots in Florida, but anybody who lives life on the water has dreamed of taking a trip to the famed Great Barrier Reef. For those of us who aren’t fortunate enough to take an Australian vacation, a sea turtle is happy to show us around.
This little guy swims, dives, and comes up for air all over the Great Barrier Reef, and a GoPro camera fitted to the turtle captures the entire mesmerizing journey. The video, shared by the World Wildlife Fund Australia last week, was part of a project to learn more about how pollution affects turtles in the Great Barrier Reef.
The clip was released before the UNESCO World Heritage Committee voted whether to put Australia on probation until the health of the reef improves.
“We bet this turtle hopes they do,” WWF Australia wrote in a Facebook post.
The Australian government came under fire recently for deciding to dump millions of tons of dredge waste from port expansion into the waters over the reef.
The World Heritage Committee’s decided to move forward with the decision to put Australia on probation, which means the government now has until 2016 to draw up a plan to improve the health of the reef. The government needs to show it has stopped the reef’s decline by 2019, according to a press release.
