On Beauty Foods
Beauty is an inside job, but perhaps not in the way that you’d expect. It all starts with diet. The foods we consume have a profound and quite noticeable effect on our skin, hair, weight and overall appearance, and are often the only thing separating us from achieving that inside-out glow we all hope to attain. What we’re putting in our bodies is just as important (if not more so) than what we’re putting on it, so in lieu of the latest skincare product or procedure, try giving your diet a beautifying update with the following four tips.
Avoid sugar.
Refined, processed sugars deplete our bodies of vitamins, minerals and water, causing our skin to dull. Sugar also creates inflammation and physical stress within the body, which in turn can lead to hormonal skin breakouts, redness and irritation. Try swapping out refined sugar for more natural, skin-nourishing alternatives such as raw honey, pure maple syrup and fresh fruit.
Eat your veggies, and make sure they’re green.
Dark, leafy green vegetables are by far the most nutrient-rich foods on the planet, and increasing your consumption of these humble “super foods” is my No. 1 beauty tip. Greens are extremely detoxifying and soothing on our systems, providing our skin with an array of vitamins and minerals for a clear, glowing complexion.
Increase your fat intake.
Healthy fats are absolutely essential for soft, supple and wrinkle-free skin. Avocados, coconut oil, raw nuts and seeds, pasture-raised eggs and extra virgin olive oil are all high quality options that I recommend eating daily for more radiant skin and all-around better health.
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.
Dry, dehydrated and lackluster skin is your body’s way of telling you it’s seriously thirsty. Aim to drink three liters of water each day to flush out breakout-causing toxins and to hydrate skin from the inside out. I love adding a squeeze of fresh lemon to mine for an extra dose of skin-nourishing vitamins and detoxification.
