Daniel Russo’s First Fishing Lesson: Give In To Patience

774

It wasn’t until a few weeks ago I found myself ruminating about life.

Keeping up with the news can seem overwhelming. There are bills, the kids and of course, the job. But all can be handled gracefully with introspection. I bring to you a way to release all the tension and stress, and free yourself of the rigors of everyday life. My favorite hobby—unmatched for freeing my mind and body—is the art of fishing.

To give you some background, I was 16 when I first picked up a fishing rod after moving from New Jersey to Florida. Culture shock hit me fast, and everywhere I turned, someone was trying to get me to fish. So I said, “Let’s try this fishing thing.”

I bought a tackle shop rod and reel combo, and let me tell you, at first I hated fishing. It was frustrating. But overtime, I found the key to unlocking the mystery of catching instead of just fishing is patience. Soon, those impressions of fishing being a waste of time and energy were fading.

If you lack patience, fishing can be downright infuriating at first. But after some forced free will and dedication, you too can fall in love with it. Just like anything else, when the routine kicks in, the mind starts releasing.

So, what’s the starting point to this stress reliever? Well, most of the work has been done for you. Everything you need is on a shelf in one of the many tackle shops or big box stores. Even if it’s just for a few minutes or hours, angling can bring you a modicum of peace while teaching you true patience.

In the upcoming issues, I’ll break down the fishing methods used in beautiful Florida. I hope you’ll give them a try.
