Ellen Latham's Orangetheory Fitness Studio Gives Stuart Residents Big Results
Based in: Stuart
How it started: Ellen Latham opened the first Orangetheory Fitness studio in Fort Lauderdale in March 2010, introducing a workout she designed that uses the scientific theory of EPOC—excess post-exercise oxygen consumption. The “Orange Effect” means exercisers continue to burn calories up to 24 hours after workouts because the body requires that much energy to recover from the activities. When Latham's studio began producing positive results, she was approached about opening franchises. Now, Orangetheory has more than 600 studios in the U.S., says the Stuart branch owner Tabitha Hopkins. “Orangetheory came to Stuart because my husband and I were members at the Jupiter location,” she says. “I lost three [pants] sizes and loved the concept so much that we opened one in Stuart.”
Orangetheory in a few words: “Fun workouts that deliver life-changing results,” Hopkins says.
Price Range: Packages cost between $59 and $159.
What sets it apart: It's like having a personal trainer, except for an affordable price because sessions are class-based. Professional fitness coaches lead each group through a workout designed by exercise physiologists. Members wear heart rate monitors during exercises to see how much effort and energy they are exerting in order to achieve their fitness goals. “My favorite part is watching people transform and become a better version of who they are ... healthier, [more fit] and happier. It is very rewarding,” Hopkins says.
