Planning a wedding at home can range from casual and inexpensive to elegant and luxurious. The possibilities are endless, as are the opportunities to create the most personal and memorable nuptials—if the logistics are thought through.

The starting point of any wedding plan is the budget, but after that, Katrina Resch, owner of FResch Perspective Event Management urges couples wanting an at-home wedding to consider the space and what it can accommodate. If the couple is not using a wedding planner, the needed vendors such as the tables and chairs providers and the caterer can help make this assessment. The couple must also consider things a paid venue naturally covers, such as a surface for dancing, event insurance, noise ordinances and permits, parking, ample bathrooms and sufficient electrical power.

Because most weddings at home mix use of indoor and outdoor space, it is critical to plan for inclement weather and changes in lighting that occur as the day progresses (think tents, fans, misters, portable heaters, twinkle lights, tea lights, etc.). Another must is planning for how things will play out just days before. A wedding at home can offer stress as last-minute preparations are made. Fortunately, saving on the cost of the venue, which can be 50 percent of a wedding budget, can allow room to hire out for these tasks.

The couple can then move into the more fun aspects, such as selecting the menu, cake, invitations, music, attire, linens, flowers and decorations, and capitalize on the home’s unique features that led to the decision to have an at-home wedding in the first place. Was it a stately tree that would serve as the focal point of the ceremony? An architectural feature of the home? Regardless, once the logistics are handled, the couple can personalize the details to create a one-of-a-kind event.
