It has been four years since I last had a good brew and crabs at a table covered in brown paper with drawn butter. Born in Maryland, this was a ritual for my family. Great conversation, hours of cracking, knocking and picking all made for an experience that will always stick with me.
As Meg and Kevin Arbour showed me around their restaurant Gettin’ Crabby located in Port Salerno, I became engulfed in the laidback ambience. “You can dress up or dress down, come with friends or solo, but one thing is for certain, if you don’t know anyone when you walk in, you will by the end of the night,” Meg says.
Looking at a tower of six tap handles, I was impressed with the selection of craft brews, which rotate often. As I sipped on a Widmer Brothers hefeweizen, I anxiously awaited my cup of crab bisque and a fresh Eastern-shore crab cake sandwich, served with chive butter sauce – a perfect match for this unfiltered beer that started it all for the Widmer Brothers in 1986.
I listened as Meg and Kevin spoke so passionately about their gem of a restaurant. They are proud to serve the freshest crabs and seafood, all made to order. Their live, local music is a huge draw for patrons, as well as the ease of strolling from bar to bar in the “Manatee Pocket.”
The Widmer Brothers Brewing Co. located in North Portland, Ore., houses free brewery tours and a brew pub that serves lunch and dinner. If you will be traveling west this year, make it a point to stop and check out this hot spot.
