2 Tornadoes Touch Down In St. Lucie County, National Weather Service Confirms
Two tornadoes hit St. Lucie County on Tuesday, May 17, according to the National Weather Service.
One, determined to be an EF-1, touched down in Lakewood Park, with winds reaching 80 to 90 mph.
The other hit Fort Pierce, just west of St. Lucie County International Airport. It has been categorized as an EF-0.
Tornadoes rated an EF-0 produce 65- to 85-mph winds, while an EF-1 tornado can produce winds from 86 to 110 mph.
Indian River County also experienced a tornado on Tuesday, with an EF-1 of 80 to 90 mph winds hitting Vero Beach Highlands.
It was Vero's wettest day in history, according to NWS Melbourne. The area received 11.22 inches of rainfall.
