Longevity is unusual in a world as fluid as the Florida restaurant industry, but Bob and Tracy Davis are survivors. After operating Stuart’s famous Jolly Sailor for 27 years, they came out of retirement to launch Sailor’s Return in 2009 and recently celebrated their tenth anniversary. A large part of their success lies in their ability to be all things to all people. “We have a casual atmosphere with an upscale flair,” says general manager Michael LaMattina. “Customers may not feel like they’re in a fine dining restaurant when they come in, but they get a fine dining experience—whether they sit at the bar for Happy Hour or enjoy a full-blown dinner with a nice bottle of wine.”
The restaurant sits directly on Sunset Bay Marina & Anchorage, so fresh seafood is the priority, with five to seven varieties of fish offered each week. The kitchen strives for consistency in preparing meals for dining in and takeout. Boaters can take advantage of 930 feet of courtesy docking. Sailor’s Return is involved in many charities on a rotating basis, hosting recent fundraisers for the American Cancer Society and Bahamas relief efforts. “Our staff is the reason we’re successful,” says LaMattina. “Most of us have been here since the restaurant opened, and their efforts are what makes us click.”
