Martin County Airport/Witham Field Is Named Florida's General Aviation Airport Of The Year
Looks like Stuart has another thing to be proud of: Florida's best general aviation airport.
Martin County Airport/Witham Field in Stuart was recently named the state's General Aviation Airport of the Year by the Florida Department of Transportation.
Witham Field is a 726-acre public airport from which more than 200 private and business aircraft depart.
A general aviation (GA) airport is used for non-airline and non-military flights. That means anything from gliders and motorized parachutes to corporate jets can depart from a GA airport. At Martin County Airport, flight training, law enforcement flighs and air ambulance activity are also common.
For this award, general aviation airports in Florida were evaluated on their safety, aesthetics and airport management.
"Everything from the condition of the runways to the professionalism of airport staff is taken into account," airport manager George Stokus said.
Stokus, who has managed the airport for five years and worked in other Florida airports before that, said one of Witham Field's distinguishing traits is its embrace of "the community airport character."
For example, the airport has been recognized for various noise projects, environmental improvements, and most recently, a partnership with J.D. Parker Elementary School's STEM program, Stokus explained.
"These various community airport aspects have been successful because the local communities, airport tenants, airport users and airport administration have collaborated to develop successful programs," he said.
