At The Sailfish Splash Kids Triathlon, Children Will Prove They’re Better Athletes Than You
On your mark, get set, go!
Children from ages 5 through 12 will be running, cycling and swimming their way to victory during the Sailfish Splash Kids Triathlon on Aug. 30.
The fourth annual event at Sailfish Splash Waterpark will feature races for four age groups:
- Freshman: ages 5-6 swim 25 meters / bike 0.25 miles / run 0.25 miles
- Sophomore: ages 7-8 swim 50 meters / bike 1.0 miles / run 0.5 miles
- Junior: ages 9-10 swim 100 meters / bike 2.0 miles / run 0.5 miles
- Senior: ages 11-12 swim 150 meters / bike 3.0 miles / run 1.0 miles
The parents of many of the children who typically register for these events are triathletes themselves, if not runners or cyclists, Martin County Recreation Coordinator Dave Gladding said, but for most kids, this event marks their own foray into the triathlon circuit.
Of course, the little ones often need a little more direction.
“We do have a lot of volunteers that show them where to go,” Gladding said, adding there's nothing "grueling" about the race route that goes around the park.
Sign-in begins at 6 a.m., and the races will kick off at 7 a.m. This year, the event will start with the younger group, and then they’ll go heat by heat. Awards will go to those who place first, second and third in each age division.
The cost for registration is $35 and includes access to the park’s facility for the day. Family members will get 30 percent off park admission. Since the event usually wraps up around 11 a.m., many participants and their families usually stick around for the afternoon, Gladding said. The last day to register is Aug. 24.
Gladding said he hopes for a turnout similar to the event’s first year, which saw about 100 registered athletes.
