Now + Forever
Kayla Marie Cochran & Roy Edward Friedrich, III
What they do: Kayla, 24, is a nurse in the Martin County Health Systems and Roy, 31, is a firefighter and EMT for Martin County Fire Rescue.
How they met: Mutual friends brought Kayla and Roy together nearly seven years ago. They both had an idea that each other was “the one” for years, but Kayla says they “sort of let marriage come naturally and when we were both ready.”
On the proposal: The couple frequently takes walks on the beach, since their home is only a few blocks away, so Kayla didn’t find it unusual when Roy asked her if she’d like to go. It was Kayla’s 23rd birthday, and as they walked by the water, Roy proposed. Prior, he’d hired a photographer to capture the moment from a distance and stationed a bottle of Champagne nearby.
On selecting the site for the reception and ceremony: Kayla and Roy assessed their options for months before finally choosing the Mansion at Tuckahoe since it was near the water.
On the theme: The goal was to host a classic and simple wedding using the colors black and ivory. “I wanted my bouquet to be the only accent color – red roses,” Kayla says.
On whether or not to have a first look: Kayla says she and Roy didn’t make a decision on the first look until the night before the wedding. At the last moment, they decided to have their first time seeing each other be that day when Kayla was walking down the aisle. “It was an amazing feeling and [I’m] so glad we decided to do that,” Kayla says.
