Letter From The Publisher: Summertime And The Living Is Luxurious
There is nothing better than deciding what to do for summer vacation. Some years it’s a great getaway abroad, some years it’s a quick trip to our neighbors in the Caribbean, and sometimes it’s a staycation in Florida to enjoy a new boat—that’s our plan.
Our editors have put together a great road tripping feature just for you. Enjoy destinations on each coast of Florida, some by boat or some by car. Whichever way you choose, get out there and explore!
While writing this letter I am looking at a shelf of awards that Stuart Magazine has won. One of the most special ones I cherish is my nomination for “Woman of Distinction” for business/professional 2017 from the Soroptimist of Stuart. I was so honored to be nominated alongside an amazing group of women. My nomination for this award in the business/professional category was one of the most important nights of my life. The best part is anyone can nominate someone. Here are the criteria to be nominated: One must demonstrate high ethical standards, be a recognized role model, have a strong sense of community responsibility and be outstanding in her contribution to Martin County.
I wanted the magazine to cover this organization to educate our readers on the past winners, how they were nominated and how they were moved by the experience and humbled, as I was. I can only say to women out there to keep doing things for the community and helping out where it is needed. Someday, you might be nominated by someone special.
“Rising stars” must be between the ages of 17 and 21, otherwise all other categories have no age limits. Nominations end in January each year, and in the spring, a special dinner takes place where the winners are announced. It’s a wonderful time with all the nominees, other past winners and local business professionals. You can go to soroptimistofstuart.org and make your nomination.
In honor of Wayne Huizenga, a longtime South Florida resident and businessman, we have a wonderful story about his community involvement and meaningful improvements and donations to the local area. We are lucky to have his family members carrying on his legacy locally. We hope you enjoy learning more about his background with our piece written by Gulfstream Media Group’s publisher, Bernie McCormick.
Our favorite time of year is here—time for our “Best Of,” which we have rebranded as “Best of the Region” to include our neighbors to the west and to the north. Suggestions were taken from readers, which we then compiled into a list of categories in the spring. Readers generally have two to three months to vote. We take this seriously and work hard to make sure only honest voting is counted. We are excited to share this year’s winners with you. Next year, we will be expanding and adding new categories. If you have a category you think we missed, make sure to contact me as we work on next year’s “Best of the Region.”
From the staff at Stuart Magazine, enjoy your summer and we will see you next season!
