Relay For Life
The American Cancer Society of Martin County has announced an exciting change for Relayers across the county this year: the new, all-county Relay For Life on April 16 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
This year's Relay For Life will combine both the Relay For Life of Hobe Sound and the Relay For Life of Stuart for one giant celebration in the fight against cancer, raising funds for vital cancer research and services for cancer patients around the country, includ right here in Martin County.
"Together our Relay will mean more teams, more activities, and more community camaraderie and spirit in the fight against cancer," said Relay For Life of Stuart’s event lead Amy Bottegal. "We're very excited to join with the Hobe Sound Relay For Life for the bigger and better event."
Relay For Life is an overnight community fundraising walk to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Participating teams setup a campsite around the track and creatively fundraise throughout the night. The festivities include games and activities, family-friendly entertainment, food and of course - survivor celebration.
Relay For Life is kicked off with the opening Survivor Lap, where cancer survivors walk the first lap, cheered on and celebrated by hundreds of Relayers. Relay also pays tribute to those who have lost their fight to cancer, or are currently still fighting the battle, with a special Luminaria Ceremony, where candles are lit inside personalized luminaria bags and placed around the Relay track as glowing tributes to those who’ve been affected by cancer.
"We're very excited to join the Stuart Relay for one giant Martin County Relay For Life celebration this year," said Relay For Life of Hobe Sound event lead Kim Waser Nash. "Many of our teams had overlapping participation, and this year we can all celebrate the value and spirit of Relay For Life together as one community."
Funds raised at the Relay For Life of Martin County support vital cancer research, and also support local programs for patients in Martin County fighting cancer, including rides to doctor's appointment and treatment, care management, and a resource room complete with wigs for patients undergoing chemotherapy.
