50 Years of Fashion

While some trends endure the test of time, others play phoenix, cycling a rebirth into fashion every few decades. To celebrate 50 years of our flagship publication, Gold Coast, we’d also like to celebrate 50 years of fashion. Lorena Shiff, originator of the online consignment store Lorenasworth.com, and local closet “editor,” shares looks appearing on the runways now that resemble trends from the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and ’90s.

’60s Mini skirt

Runway look: Isabel Marant Spring 2015 Ready-to-Wear

Buy: Isabel Marant jeneth pleated leather mini skirt; $3,140; Felipe split-sleeve cotton-jersey T-shirt; $210; Available at net-a-porter.com

Lorena’s word: The mini skirt has evolved since [the 1960s], varying in different lengths, materials and shapes, but the idea stayed the same: run, dance, move freely and, of course, show off those legs!

’70s Wrap dress

’70s Wrap dress

Runway look: Diane Von Furstenberg Spring 2015 Ready-to-Wear

Buy: Diane Von Furstenberg Wrap Dress; $598; Available at bloomingdales.com

Lorena’s word: The wrap dress was extremely popular overnight, as it was meant for all women – no matter your height, weight or build, as it flatters them all. Furthermore, it was a very versatile piece that could be worn both to work by day, and to clubs by night. This is what I would suggest you keep in your closet forever.

’80s Metallics

’80s Metallics

Runway look: Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2015

Buy: Alexander McQueen crepe blazer; $2,195; Available at net-a-porter.com; Escada metallic silk trousers; $1,295; Available at Saks Fifth Avenue in Boca Raton or saksfifthavenue.com; Birkin Bag; Lorena’s own; contact Lorena for help tracking down your own.

Lorena’s word: Ah, the 1980s, probably my personal favorite decade in fashion. I believe there is no era in fashion as widely loved as this one. It was a time filled with all oversized and over-the-top, an era filled with shiny leggings, lots of color, big slouchy, oversized tops and, of course, how can we forget – history was made when Hermès introduced the Birkin Bag in 1984 and changed the way we look at purses forever.

’90s Designer-excess

’90s Designer-excess

Runway look: Moschino Fall 2015

Buy: Moschino oversized printed cotton-jersey T-shirt; $250; R13 boy skinny low-rise jeans; $325; Available at net-a-porter.com; Manolo Blahnik BB leather point-toe pumps; $595; Available at Saks Fifth Avenue in Boca Raton or saksfifthavenue.com

Lorena’s word: The 1990s brought an anti-conformist approach to fashion making us all, subconsciously, fashionable or in. The 1990s eventually created a new trend in fashion called the casual chic, making the white or black T-shirt, especially those baring European designer label logos, and jeans look very popular, along with hoodies and sneakers.
