The GypSea Cottage

GypSea Cottage owner Kristen Couperus is an entrepreneur with decades of retail experience. Her impeccable taste and positive energy have made this 1-year-old boutique more than a shop: It’s a coastal experience that promises to “soothe your salty soul.”

Couperus, who comes from a family of small-business owners, opened GypSea Cottage mid-pandemic, bringing a sense of light and calm—and a distinctly bohemian vibe—to Osceola Street. Beachy pastels and a subtle red currant, berry, and patchouli aroma beckon passersby into what feels like someone’s, well … beach cottage.

Although the brick-and-mortar shop is still young, Couperus launched the online version of the store in 2017, honing her vision and immersing herself in the Florida lifestyle. (You might catch her cruising around Stuart on her longboard!)

“I have spent my life building and creating this vision,” says Couperus. “It’s a dream come true.”

Women’s apparel, jewelry, accessories, and coastal home decor are artfully displayed in the shop with exclusive collections, including bamboo and rattan furnishings from Bali and local coastal wood furniture.

“We seek out small-batch product made by local, domestic, and worldwide entrepreneurs,” says Couperus. “Many of our products have a story.”

Come for the Hemlock Hat, stay for the story.
