The Best Luxury Home Appliances

I recently showed a stunning $10 million beach-front estate. While the design was not one I would select, I could appreciate its aesthetics. What I did not appreciate, however, was its builder’s grade, entry-level white appliances. In truth, even most tract builders are using higher-end appliances than what was in this home. It was a disappointment equally noted by my buyers. Our shared disdain was largely because we expected more from a custom home.

So what kind of appliances would one expect to see in a luxury home? The best of the best include Viking, Thermador, Gaggenau, Miele, Sub-Zero, Wolf and La Cornue.

Viking, responsible for the first professional range in the U.S., is best known for its stainless steel cooking line but offers other appliances. Thermador is one of the more affordable luxury brands and its strengths lie in refrigeration and cooking. Gaggenau, founded in Germany in the 1600s, offers city-chic, industrial style and incredible function. This style and performance comes at a price higher than that of the first two lines mentioned.

Miele garnered respect for its products with incredibly reliable dishwashers and laundry machines, and has moved into being competitive with its cooking line.

Sub-zero, with two-compressor performance, air scrubbers, vacuum seals and water purifiers, is the standard that all other refrigeration units are measured against. Its sister line, Wolf, is a heavy hitter for cooking, with dual convection technology. Embodying all that is luxury is La Cornue, which only makes custom, hand-crafted cooking products in France set at prices higher than some homes.

One look at any of these brands and you will understand the statements they make in a luxury home. They are a thing of beauty, pushing at the emotions much as fine art does, and when their presence is expected, their absence has an opposite effect.
