Small Frights, Big Delights

Downtown Stuart is tricked out again this year for the twenty-seventh annual Hobgoblins on Main Street Halloween event October 24 from noon to 3 p.m. This free family-focused event features a jam-packed afternoon of ghoulish fun for all ages. Kids can complement their costumes with a custom face paint design or opt for a little sparkle with fairy hair extensions. A trick-or-treating trail will offer numerous stops for sweets and treats, and interactive kids’ activities will keep little princes and princesses busy. Tunes will be spinning all afternoon with a DJ and live music performances on the Riverwalk Stage. Grown-up ghosts and goblins can enjoy chilly cocktails and fabulous fare from a convoy of food trucks. Judges will be on the lookout with awards for the best-dressed families, children, and pets. The event caps off with the Hobgoblins Parade finale.

Running Scared

Ghosts and goblins, mummies and monsters will hit the streets this month for the Treasure Coast Halloween Half Marathon and Relay. This annual event hosted by the Treasure Coast Running Club has been a favorite for 25 years, welcoming runners of all levels with a combination of competitive racing and a fun Halloween theme. Kicking off October 25 at 6:30 a.m., the 13.1-mile race course follows a picturesque route from Stuart Beach, over the Jensen Beach Causeway, and along Sewall’s Point Road. Runners will enjoy some of the most stunning water views on the Treasure Coast as they compete for the fastest finish.

While many runners opt to run the entire course solo, the relay is one of the most popular aspects of the race. “Runners can team up with one or two other runners and each run a leg of the race,” says Mike Melton, organizer of the event. “Some teams have three people who each run roughly 4 to 5 miles, and some teams have two runners where one starts the race, passes it to another runner, and then the first runner finishes,” he explains, nothing that the relay is a fun way for newer or less competitive runners to enjoy the event.

The marathon also welcomes runners from all over the world with a virtual option to compete. “Virtual runners can run the race on their own and they have until Monday night to post their time,” says Melton. Awards will be given for overall performance as well as by age group. Runners who step out in their finest Halloween duds may win top awards in the race’s costume contest. Previous races have attracted up to 450 runners. “It’s a fun way to celebrate Halloween,” says Melton. “Every year it gets better.”
