Some sisters bond over clothing, sports, or music, but Nichole Johnson and her sisters Victoria and Michelle connect over coffee.

When COVID derailed Johnson’s successful career casting and developing television shows, she pivoted to pandemic-resistant coffee, despite admittedly not even knowing how to brew a pot. She took a crash course in becoming a barista, watching a ton of YouTube videos, before launching Sorelle Coffee Co. just over two years ago.

The name for her new venture came easy: sorelle is the Italian word for sisters. “The core of my business is about the love and bond that my sisters and I share,” says Johnson. “It’s also about my two daughters, Norah and Willa, and the bond they share.”

The original plan was to get her sisters to move to Florida so they could all work together, but Johnson is still working on convincing them to relocate. For now, her sisters pitch in part-time from their homes in Long Island, doing what they can remotely, namely a lot of social media. Johnson is running the daily grind in Palm City with her hubby, Alexander, serving cups of joe from the mobile food truck, which parks in the plaza near Palm City Music School on SW Mapp Road.

Sorelle has its own coffee bean roasts, which Johnson describes as “super smooth and less acidic.” She adds: “You can taste the caramel, cocoa, and honey in our drip coffee and cold brew, and the cherry and dark chocolate in our espresso. What we’re really known for is our cold brew. It takes 17 hours to make a batch.”

Johnson isn’t giving up hope that her sisters will someday make the move to Florida. But being more than 1,200 miles away doesn’t weaken their bond. “If I didn’t have my sisters, I don’t know what I would do,” she says. “My product is coffee and baked goods, but family is my business.”
